What does this indicator measure?
This indicator details the type of nonprofits operating in the Dallas metroplex and the financing available to those organizations.
Why is this indicator important?
Nonprofits perform critical activities within the community. The existence of organizations with broad interests, and the funding to support their activities, improves the overall health of the community.
How are we doing?
According to a November 2003 search of Guidestar, Dallas has more than 6,000 nonprofits, nearly 50% fewer than Houston. Dallas has more nonprofits than Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio.
- The vast majority, about 75%, take in less than $25,000 a year and at times can become inactive. More than 500 of Dallas' nonprofits have annual incomes exceeding $1 million. Of these, 70 have incomes of over $20 million.
- Dallas nonprofits serve a wide variety of causes. According to Guidestar, the two biggest categories served in Dallas are human services and public, societal benefit.
